Will ‘Netflix’ model fix drug prices?

As cures are developed for many inherited and debilitating diseases that can exacerbate poverty; we cannot let access to these new treatments become a divide that further separates the better off from the poor.

Former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb argued that new treatments should be available to everyone, not just the wealthy. “Drugmakers need to make sure there’s equitable access to effective therapies,” he wrote in a commentary published by CNBC. He also argued that drugmakers should negotiate with states on “Netflix-style” subscription models similar to Louisiana’s contract with Gilead Sciences, which plans to treat the state’s Medicaid population with its hepatitis-C drugs in exchange for promised volume of a certain number of patients.
