An estimated 2,800 health care providers operated in a retail setting in 2017, up from just 350 in 2006, according to a new study. This has included urgent care and primary care, but real estate firm JLL predicts that oncology and infusion services will soon start moving into retail settings. The move toward providing care on an outpatient basis is one driver of the trend. Another factor is that the recent closures of major retail chains create more opportunities for health care providers to consider non-traditional real estate.
