JAMA | Comment + Response, January 2019 — Retail Clinics Provide Important Antibiotic Stewardship

JAMA Intern Med. 2019;179(1):123-124. doi:10.1001/jamainternmed.2018.7016
To the Editor (JAMA) We were surprised to read the recently published Invited Commentary by Incze and colleagues1 referencing antibiotic use in the outpatient setting. Their commentary did not acknowledge the superior performance of retail clinics in antibiotic stewardship, particularly for viral upper respiratory tract infections. Instead, the authors unfairly blended the performance of retail and urgent care clinics, calling both “an underrecognized source of inappropriate antibiotic prescribing.”1(1269) The commentary suggested that financial incentives might be to blame.
