New, EP. 123 | DocPreneur Podcast | Genomic Medicine: The New Frontier, Part 1 of 2

By The DocPreneur Podcast Host, Michael Tetreault

SUMMER 2018 – Today we sit down with Dr. Paldeep Atwal, a board-certified clinical and medical biochemical geneticist, formerly of Mayo Clinic in Florida where he served as Medical Director for the Center for Individualized Medicine and Clinical Lead for the Department of Clinical Genomics on the Jacksonville campus. He is a fellow of both The American College of Medical Genetics & Genomics and The Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom.

In Part 1 today in our discussion we discuss the clinically relevant aspects of ‘Genomic Medicine’, how fast this has changed and how it is relevant to current practice, particularly in Concierge Medicine. This is cutting edge medicine and is at the forefront of medical practice. Patients attending a concierge practice will want this kind of information.

The Gene-Explorer program is open to a limited number of practices. To find out more about the details of the Gene-Explore program, including how practices can sign up, please visit genomemedical.com/gene-explorer.

Dr. Atwal is a clinical and medical biochemical geneticist and director of The Atwal Clinic for Genomic & Personalized Medicine, a concierge genetics clinic. Most recently, joined the team at Genome Medical as a medical geneticist. Previously he served as Medical Director for the Center for Individualized Medicine at Mayo Clinic FL on the Jacksonville campus. He received his medical degree from the University of Glasgow, and initially trained in hospital internal medicine with The Royal College of Physicians at Glasgow Royal Infirmary in Scotland. He completed his genetics fellowship at Stanford University in Palo Alto CA and subspecialty biochemical genetics fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston TX where he was involved in developing a clinical metabolomic profiling test. In addition he holds diplomas in structural molecular biology and forensic medical science and is nearing completion of an MBA program.

Genome Medical is the first nationwide medical practice focused on genetics and genomics, and we offer easy access to a national team of genetic experts who provide consultations by video or phone. We help physicians assess which patients might benefit from genetic testing; select the most appropriate genetic tests for individuals and their families; and interpret genetic test results then help integrate clinically actionable findings into patient care. Services include pre- and post-test counseling, test requisition and clinical collaboration with a patient’s primary physician.

About the Gene-Explorer Program
Genome Medical wants to make it easy for concierge medicine and direct primary care physicians to explore the integration of genetic services into their practices. That’s why we have created the Gene-Explorer program and are actively seeking practices to participate.

In Gene-Explorer, Genome Medical will provide up to 20 complimentary initial genetic consultations to a practice’s patients, in exchange for the participating provider agreeing to give insights back to Genome Medical on the services and the overall process. Patients who decide to move forward with genetic testing during their initial consultation will have a post-test genetic counseling appointment with Genome Medical at no charge.

What Genome Medical provides for the practice
• Assessment of referred patients to determine who might benefit from high-risk or elective genetic testing.
• Selection and recommendation of the most appropriate genetic tests for patients and their families. The tests can be ordered by either the primary provider or Genome Medical.
• Interpretation of test results and creation of personalized clinical reports to help integrate the results into the patient’s care.
