Pay for primary care physicians is going up, but they’re still in short supply | Benefits PRO

Interest in DPC is very popular in certain markets, but while demand by Patients is on par, entry by Physicians and reports of closures and startup expenditures to educate remains a challenge. While interest levels by Patients into subscription-based and direct pay care may remain steady, growth in the DPC space still remains gradual. Widespread adoption by young female Physicians is increasing, but many outsiders looking in on the space believe a few thousand more Physicians must show interest in DPC to meet growing consumer interest, according to The DPC Journal Patient Search, May 2018 reports.

There is such a shortage of primary care physicians that their pay has risen by more than 10 percent over the past five years—and without a corresponding increase in productivity. That’s according to the 2018 MGMA DataDive Provider Compensation data from Medical Group Management Association, which also found that that increase is close to double the increase for specialty physicians’ compensation over the same time frame, highlighting how severe the primary care physician shortage has become.
