Whether at an assisted-living facility or at home, the surest way to keep the amount of care needed down, along with the attendant costs, is to stay out of the hospital. “The knee-jerk reaction is to call 911, including at assisted-living facilities,” says Anne Tumlinson, a public policy researcher and consultant who also runs Daughterhood, a site to help caregivers navigate the elder and health-care systems. “But the key is keeping people out of the hospital. Find a good primary-care or concierge doctor who offers more-personalized care. A strong relationship with a doctor will go a long way toward keeping someone out of the hospital.” And whenever possible, bring hospital services home: Mobile medical services now allow people to get ultrasounds, X-rays, and swallow tests done at home.
