The San Francisco-based primary care system is partnering with Dignity Health in Arizona to open three locations in the metro Phoenix area. Plans call for starting with its first primary care office at 22nd Street and Camelback Road in Phoenix. Another one will be in the San Tan Shopping Center next to Macy’s in Gilbert, followed by a third site near Scottsdale Fashion Square.
Similar to concierge medicine, One Medical Group charges a $150 annual fee to patients — which isn’t covered by health insurance — to gain access to physicians 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including video visits using a patient’s smartphone.
It’s not quite a concierge medicine model because concierge doctors maintain a small number of patients and charge thousands of dollars a year to allow generous access to the physician.
But patients will still get more time in the exam room with their One Medical Group physician, said Matthew Cox, chief financial officer for Dignity Health’s Arizona service area.
They also guarantee they will see their patients on time.
“For me, nothing is more frustrating than running to my primary care physician and waiting 35 to 40 minutes to get in,” Cox said.
Cox said Dignity Health is a major shareholder in the partnership to expand One Medical Group offices in Arizona. Plans call for recruiting two primary care physicians for each location, and add more locations as demand dictates.
“As we know, primary care is what everybody needs,” he said.
Phoenix is one of the top cities that doesn’t have enough doctors, according to a BetterDoctor.com survey.
