Reimagining house calls as a concierge service

July 17, 2014 6:30 am by

A healthcare startup that made its debut at StartUp Health Weekend and went on to win has rebranded. The service that seeks to reimagine house calls for physicians and nurse practitioners has backed away from the all-too-common name, “OnCall.” Curbside Care gives users the power to order a physician or nurse practitioner visit to their home or office for a selection of non-emergency conditions.

Grant Mitchell, a co-founder of the company, previously co-founded AdhereTech. He sees plenty of market opportunity for its service.  The pricing for the concierge service resembles what you’d expect for the hospitality industry. Like a junior stylist compared with a senior stylist, a nurse costs half as much as a physician. The company would split the fee with the providers. The conditions its service is designed to treat spans muscle aches, fever, cough to STDs, and digestive problems.

Curbside Care is among the startups in the Digital Health Accelerator taking up residence at the technology innovation space at 3401 Market Street. It brands itself the uber for healthcare.

Although it would seem like a shortage of physicians would mean that doctors aren’t exactly twiddling their thumbs for work to do, the founders argue that is the case in some parts of medicine, particularly emergency department physicians who have shifts in which they work seven days straight and then have seven days off. Most early-stage health IT companies in this area use telemedicine and telehealth rather than relying on in-person visits such as Sherpaa Health and HealthTap,

At the time of StartUp Health Weekend, judges said they liked the concept because it responds to the consumer demand for more services. Its offering is pitched at a sizable market with a lot of supply and demand.
