Friday, March 28, 2014 – MADISON – If you worry you might have broken something as you came down off that ladder hard, you could head to ASAP Urgent Care, a spanking new urgent medical treatment facility that recently opened its doors.

Here, there won’t be any “salty” staff to greet you or long waits in a crowded emergency room; its website promises you will be greeted by “a warm and friendly concierge in the lounge.” And, that’s only the start.

“We plan to bring Starbucks to the medical world,” is the wry way that ASAP’s CEO Traver Hutchins, sums up the business plan for the new Madison enterprise. One of the new twists is that he refers to persons seeking treatments at ASAP as “customers,” rather than “patients.”

In keeping with this approach, ASAP’s offices have the appearance of high end, business suites. They are a far, far cry from the sterility of hospital waiting rooms, and they are meant to be that way. There is a private children’s waiting area called a “waiting lounge,” for instance. There is also soft mood music in the background, expensive office furnishings throughout and classic artwork along the walls.

The value of having good taste at a medical facility, the CEO Hutchins said in a recent interview, “Art can have a healing effect and a beneficial outcome.” As for the well-appointed offices, “There is nothing negative here,” he says earnestly.

No Appointment Necessary

A prime advantage of ASAP Urgent Care is that it is never necessary to call ahead for an appointment. Medical services at ASAP Urgent Care are offered promptly and quickly to walk-ins, as one would expect from an efficient business operation.

Although there were no doctors on duty during a recent visit to the ASAP’s offices in Madison, according to Dr. Lawrence Earl, chief medical officer and chief operation officer of ASAP, doctors frequently take 12 hour shifts at the offices in Madison.

Also, even when there is no medical doctor on the premises, according to Dr. Earl, staff medical doctors with the assistance of an onsite physician’s assistant can monitor patients electronically in real time. They can also counsel the medical specialist on the scene.

On site services at “ASAP Urgent Care”

It is important to note that ASAP Urgent Care does not offer to its customers a hospital size range of medical services. Nor are their offices open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, as are the emergency rooms of hospitals.

The many health care services that are available at ASAP Urgent Care offices are listed on its website. According to the website, they are:

Onsite Services include a range of injuries and illnesswa, allegory/asthma, pediatrics, travel medicine, lab services, digital x-rays, home sleep testing and weight management.

In addition, to these services offered to individual customers, ASAP offers online doctor visits for patients and employers.

Online doctor visits for employers include employee diagnostic testing, online doctor visits, flu clinics, injuries and illness, pre-placement physicians, drug screening, dot physicals, onside services and travel medicines.

ASAP’s offices in Madison are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The only days that offices are closed is on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

CEO Hutchins sums up the range of services at ASPA Urgent Care, noting, “We do everything short of life threatening or limb threatening,” adding, “We do not do surgery.”

As for treatment of broken bones, Chief Medical Officer Earl says that in many cases the setting of broken bones can be performed by ASAP staff doctors.

Only in rare cases where customers have severe and complicated fractures are they referred to hospitals. When this this occurs, according to ASAP Chief Medical Officer Earl, the hospital most likely will call in a private orthopedic surgeon to perform the operation. Another example where ASAP does not treat a customer is when they are threatening suicide. In such cases ASPA immediately calls 911.

Health care at one fifth the price

The cost of medical care at ASPA Urgent Care, according to Hutchins, is one fifth of the price charged by hospital emergency rooms. Of course, different health care plans also play a large role in patient payments for health care.

In summary, according Hutchins, what a customer gets at the new ASAP Urgent Care office in Madison are: speed in addressing medical problem of the person who walks in; value as to price, and convenience at its downtown location.

It’s website also mentions heated robes as a bonus feature.

On a recent visit to the ASAP facility in Madison, Karen Leonetti, a registered nurse and a radiologic technologist, was in charge of the facility. Leonetti lives in Madison, and she said that ASAP was “a great addition to the town.” Her specialty, she said, is treating sports injuries.

Also, on duty was Geoff Burnham, a physician’s assistant, and Chris Alexander, an e-ray technician. In instances when a medical doctor is not at the ASAP Urgent Care facility in Madison, a “real time” electronic connection can be made with a physician who is off-site.

The expansion plans of ASAP urgent care

In addition to its new facility in Madison, there is another facility in Hamden. Future ASAP offices are also planned in North Haven and Milford. The eventual dream of Hutchins is to open as many as 100 ASAP Urgent Car offices all over New England.
